Former Commonwealth Games Swimmer joins Northcote Swim Club as Head Coach

Northcote Swim Club and Clublinks are proud to announce the appointment of former Malaysian national representative swimmer, Ian James Barr, as our new Head Coach.

He competed for Malaysia as both a Junior and Open swimmer for five years at the World Junior Swimming Championships, the Asian Games, the World Cup, and the New Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Barr, a former Malaysian national record holder in the 200m Individual Medley, will lead the club’s programs at the new state-of-the-art Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre (NARC).

“I’m excited to join such a strong, community-focused club,” said Barr.

“I’m looking forward to helping every swimmer achieve their potential.”

“We’re thrilled to have Ian,” added Crispin Butteriss, Northcote Swim Club’s President.

“His vision and experience are perfect for our club’s rebirth. We now have a great coach to go with a great facility. I hope to see lots of new faces joining the club over the next twelve months.”

Lisa Williams, Aquatics Manager at NARC, stated “Ian’s arrival marks an exciting new chapter for Northcote Swim Club, and builds out our pool deck team with someone with international experience.”

The club is now welcoming new members, particularly younger swimmers who have completed learn-to-swim programs and are looking to continue their development in competitive swimming.

About Northcote Swim Club

Northcote Swim Club (NSC) is a community-based club, providing coaching and training programs for swimmers of all abilities in the Darebin area.

Our focus is to provide a positive environment to develop the skills, strength and fitness of our swimmers and provide pathways toward competitive swimming. NSC has training programs tailored to meet the development needs of swimmers of varying abilities and welcomes swimmers with a disability who are interested in joining our club.

NSC was established in the 1920s by an enthusiastic Northcote community and held its first swimming activities at Northcote Bath. The Northcote Bath closed in 1969 and was replaced with a brand-new pool on Victoria Road, Northcote Aquatic & Recreation Centre (NARC). NSC are now based out of the recently re-developed NARC which reopened in November 2023.

NSC are open to new club members and welcome you to join their club.
